Chavez - New Year's Eve @ Spaceland - UPDATED 11/7/09

5/12/04 @ The Bowery Ballroom, New York City, NY

Hmmm, this was the first ever trip to New York, this was the fun memorable one. It was pretty short, sort of like a recon mission. In and out I go. I stayed with a fellow Thirdgearscratcher, Ted, who resided in NYC. I don't remember the exact city he lived in, but do recall the thunder storm that scared the shit out of me that night while trying to sleep in their living room.

This was a benefit concert for Jackie Ferry who worked for Matador Records I think. Not too keen on that, but she had cancer of some sort like melanoma. Her bills were mounting for the treatment she received and so Matador decided to have this show to help her out.

Har Mar Superstar played, as well as J. Mascis playing guitar accompanied by a female vocalist. I believe John Spencer Blues Explosion played after Chavez, whom I'm not very familiar with at all. Chavez played 8 songs and it was a short set for a band that hadn't played together in many, many years. They were pretty tight for the amount that they played. I just wasn't content for a 25 min set that I painfully flew out for from CA. "Our boys will shine tonight" was cut at the end b'cos the Minidisc was bad.

Well, this was a pleasant surprise that Chavez announced an LA New Year's Eve date after their 2nd return earlier that December in New York. Would I have still gone to New York if they had announced the LA date sooner? Hmm, good question, but a resound YES! It was not the best out of town trip I had, but that show made up for it. Anyways, back to the New Year's show experience... during the recording of "You Must Be Stopped" I recognized a ex-co-worker nearby and said hello during the beginning of the song (it's definitely audible in the recording). Too funny!

What's great about this particular set, is that it somewhat compliments the set in New York. BUT again, I'm glad I went to both shows. Seeing one of the bands that I listened to in college and definitely list them as an influence in my own writing as well.

NOTE: This is a minidisc transfer, so the quality isn't as good as my Ed recordings. Still bearable tho to listen and reminesce.

I've got 1 more show to xfer and that'll be all my Chavez shows, this last one was before the Spaceland New Year's show in 2006.
