Mew - The Detroit Bar - UPDATED 9/10/09

9/1/09 @ The Troubadour, Hollywood, CA

Almost as soon as Angele announced this on the Troubadour email newsletter, I immediately faxed my order over to them. Actually had to fax them 2x, because I only got 2 tickets the first time and added a 3rd ticket the 2nd time.

This was an excellent show and it being my 1st taste of Mew live, they played most of the faves I think. It was an hour and 10 min set, which was really nice. It was also announced during their set that this particular night that they played "Beach" for the 1st time live.

NOTE: I set the levels too high going into the show and didn't realize that the beginning of the set was distorting. So, there are 2 files of "New Terrain." The "Bad Version" has the whole beginning of "New Terrain" with the bad distorted clipping. The "Ok Version" fades in after the distored clipping. It is at your discretion if you want to listen to a clean version versus distorted beginning. ALSO, I set the levels too low on this recording after I had panicked about the recording levels being too high. I did some eq work, but there were a few "yellers" during the set which impeded me from doing a better job of eq'ing this show. So all apologies for this amateur recording.

I shall do my best to record the next show well. Stay tuned for the Detroit Bar show!!!

It's one thing or another, I forgot to set up the 24bit/48kHz recording on this show, but it came out well nonetheless. I cringe when I listened to the Mew/Troub show, I should've done a better job, but what can you do y'know? I'll hopefully not repeat that mistake.

Last night's Mew set was nothing but amazing. Quite different than the previous 2 shows I saw in September. No "Comforting Sounds" as a closer, which is fine with me, but they played "Silas the Magic Car" and "Snow Brigade." Interestingly enough, they opened with "Hawaii," which is my favorite song off of the latest album.

The crowd was into it. The projector was spot on with even more spectacular visuals. One of the funnier visuals I still recall is a demonic looking chihuahua barking at the camera (minus the actual barking noises, thankfully). Pretty funny stuff, but cool nonetheless.

A special treat last evening was a solo piano performance by Jonas playing New Terrain/Nervous. That was nice.

Please note: there were yappers on both side of me talking continuously throughout the set and I was with a friend. I couldn't really escape cause my friend wouldn't have had a clue. Perhaps I should have warned her beforehand. I will do that next time. Anyways, this was a very big pain in the ass to "eq," so I just normalized each track individually. That's why "New Terrain/Nervous" is so loud (that was normalized to -2db, while the remaining set was normalized to 0db).
